Israeli aggression on Gaza : Results and implications

by Dr. Nasser Kafarneh, Occupied Palestine

On behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and its General Secretary, imprisoned Comrade Ahmad Sa'adat, we greet you and thank you for the invitation to discuss and assess the current situation of the Palestinian struggle for liberation and return, in light of the recent horrific Israeli aggression against our people in Gaza.

The brutal Israeli aggression was carried out utilizing the full extent ofits U.S.-made and provided war machine, from the end of 2008 through early 2009, for a period of twenty-two days of relentless bombardment from air, land and sea.

This aggression did not come alone - it comes in the context of the
ongoing and continuous aggression by U.S. imperialism and its strategic partner, Israel , against Palestine and the Arab region, in particular, the project of building a "new Middle East ," under the pretext of "anti-terrorism" and confrontation of the so-called "axis of evil."

It is part and parcel of the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, the killing of hundreds of thousands and the destruction of all the necessities of life, and the attempted dehumanization of our people and the utter indifference and wanton violation of human rights and people's rights.

It is precisely aligned with the re-occupation of the Palestinian West Bank and the ongoing Israeli policies of murder, home destruction, invasions and arrests, along with the tearing apart of Palestinian land through the construction of the Apartheid Wall, the building of the settlements and the Zionization of Jerusalem, ever seizing and confiscating more of our land.

In this context, the Israeli aggression against Lebanon in July 2006 took place, of which the war upon Gaza is a direct descendant. This ongoing series of crimes is being committed by the successive governments and administrations of the United States and Israel in order to control and dominate the region, plunder the resources of the people of the region, and attempt to force them to act in conformity with the wishes and aspirations and interests of global capitalism and the monopoly of multinational corporations. They use their tools and agents in the region as part of their desperate attempt to reduce the effects and consequences of the financial crisis, worsening daily, and which was actually aggravated in spite of all the actions taken by the leaders and politicians of this savage and greedy capitalism. Their war against our people will not succeed in stopping the continued deterioration of the creaking structure of the capitalist system.

This presentation is provided in order to participate in a thorough and deep analysis of what has taken place and continues to take place in occupied Palestine , in particular, and the Arab region in general. The urgency and necessity of our response to these crimes cannot, in thelong run, serve as a substitute for such an analysis.

These events in Palestine are designed to target the strength and the very existence of the resistance of all different trends and ideological orientations and backgrounds, whether they be national or left, which reject the project of imperialism and Zionism in Palestine and the region. The U.S. project is specifically aimed at liquidating the Palestinian cause, and the Palestinian resistance that refuses to recognize or bow down to the dictates of U.S. hegemony and U.S. threats. The recent war on Gaza is simply the most recent escalation in the ongoing aggression against our people, and this war is continuing to the present day. What could not be accomplished by military means is being undertaken by the means of political and economic pressure in attempts to impose their terms and conditions upon our people.

The imposition of the condition of a "long-term truce" as the requirements set forth in order to open the crossings, the selection and picking and choosing of materials that could be allowed to enter Gaza according to the moods and whims of the occupier, and the process of oversight of our reconstruction and the management of all details by the various colonial circles, are all part of the continuation of this war against our people.

This war, this imperialist and Zionist project, also aims to put pressure upon our people to force them to accept the Zionist project and Bush's American dream: an exclusive Jewish state in accordance with the vision of Bush and the proponents of Zionism, a racist ideology that does not recognize the right of our people over our own land, or even our right to ive on our land. This means an open and transparent exercise of brutal racism and the continuing displacement of our people from our ancestral homeland by pressure and force. It also aims to destroy and cancel the
right of return for Palestinian refugees, which is guaranteed by international legitimacy and UN resolutions on Palestine , in the first place by Resolution 194. This is an attempt to target and undo the inalienable rights recognized and endorsed by international legitimacy over sixty years of Palestine 's Nakba.

The mere attempts to raise this vision, and public advocacy for it, debunk any and all claims of the United States and Zionism to bluster and falsely lift the banner of "democracy," "justice" or "human rights," when all are denied to our people, labeled "terrorists" for upholding their national and collective rights in the face of their pressure and their war.

On the other hand, the so-called "state" or Palestinian authority they discuss will never meet the minimum rights of the Palestinian people and is in no way a solution that achieves the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people to freedom and independence and self-determination, as the owners of our land and our rights. The facts on the ground after their massive land-grab, the establishment of Zionization and settlement building, the dismemberment of our land into

The balance of power and all objective and subjective circumstances of the parties to the conflict, including the massive war machine of U.S. weaponry, tends to favor the Israeli enemy and its attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause, the Left, and the strong resistance in the region. Nevertheless, it has failed to achieve its objectives, whether in Iraq or Lebanon or Palestine , thanks to the steadfastness and valiant resistance of the people and the support of all peoples of the world for these just causes, including the recent demonstrations of solidarity that filled the vast majority of the cities in Europe and the Americas , Asia and Africa.

The size and scope of this solidarity and these demonstrations, unprecedented in the history of the conflict, is an indication that the issue of Palestine is the cause of all the left and progressive forces in the world as a battle with imperialism and capitalism and its tool developed in the region - Israel . The battle in Palestine is the battle between the forces of anti-imperialism in Palestine and the world on the one hand and imperialism and Israel on the other.

The emergence of new parties and forces, strongly anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist, is a prelude to the consolidation of these efforts in order to be able to win the war against imperialism and its ambitions and projects everywhere in the world. Solidarity and support should not be seasonal or periodic, but continuous. We must work together for organization and institutions that can change the course of history. The steps that have been taken to mobilize popular opinion and the development of popular tribunals and the use of the courts by people's movements to prosecute Israeli war criminals for their crimes against the Palestinian people are steps in the right direction, steps which must also be followed by popular pressure on governments in all countries of the world to pressure the United Nations to implement its resolutions concerning the Palestinian cause, including the right of self-determination, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and the right of return of Palestinian refugees to their homes from which they were displaced.

We see the only real resolution of the conflict coming on the basis of the establishment of one democratic Palestine on all of the land of Palestine for all of its citizens, without discrimination on the basis of race, religion, or sex, which increasingly recognized by many as the optimal and necessary resolution of the conflict. This resolution is incompatible with the ideology, culture and goals of Zionism and imperialism, who are seeking to continue and sustain the conflict in order to achieve their interests and the interests of multinational monopoly corporations to to control and dominate the destiny and history and the affairs of this region and all other regions of the world.
