Workshop: Uprisings in Latin America and the left
Speaker: Wilhelm Langthaler - Campo Antiimperialista, Austria

Use the impetus of the Bolivarian process in Venezuela

After two decades of defeats and reflux of the anti-imperialist and revolutionary movement in Latin America, the ascendancy of Hugo Chavez somewhat reversed that tendency. Under his presidency the pro-imperialist oligarchy was ousted from political power and Chavez keeps challenging U.S. imperialism. His progressive steps induced a popular movement of the lower classes which keeps growing. But the decisive battles are still to come. While Chavez moves to the left his state apparatus controlled by elements of the old bureaucracy and reformist forces is setting up new obstacles for the popular movement. If the revolutionary movement will not be able to play an independent role soon the entire Bolivarian process is in acute danger.
Also in many other Latin American countries the openly neo-liberal forces were defeated in elections expressing certainly the popular masses’ desire for social change. But in none of these countries the left-liberal governments represent a break with the oligarchy similar to Venezuela. On the contrary for example Brazil’s Lula, the main sponsor of the Social Forum, not only continued the neo-liberal agenda but also disburdened the U.S. in Iraq by taking the lead in the imperialist stabilisation operation in Haiti. In Bolivia Evo Morales will certainly have more troubles to return to business as usual but it is clear that he does not want to face the imperialist wrath which he would provoke implementing the popular demand for the nationalisation of the natural gas resources. What is being built in Latin America has some similarities to European bi-polarism in order to dissuade the growing popular anger.
The decisive lesson of Venezuela to Latin America is twofold: a) you need not back down to imperialism and b) the civilist and socialforumist illusion of creating another world within this world by ignoring the struggle for state power as been falsified.
As Anti-imperialist Camp we propose to lend our full support to Chavez and the Bolivarian revolutionary forces supporting his forthcoming electoral campaign also from abroad and to practically take up his proposal to create an Anti-imperialist Front.
