Main Panel: Iraqi resistance in the front line of the antiimperialist struggle
Speaker: Susan Zengin – ILPS Turkish Section
People’s Resistance and Anti- imperialism
Imperialist aggression led by US imperialism increases constantly against the oppressed labour masses. When US president Bush sat down again in its presidential chair in 2005, he used the term "freedom" exactly 42 times and he ended his speech with the words "to keep the freedom in our country depends on the freedom in other countries". While he was giving that speech, the Iraqi territory was so called "becoming free" through the blood of the Iraqi people, massacres and torture. Imperialism showed their understanding of "freedom" in the prison of Abu Gahrib and the Guantanamo base and some more "secret" torture centres. The coming out of the used nuclear chemical weapons in the Fallujah massacre and the torture pictures that were published in public just showed, are showing to people in the world the meaning of the operations under the term of "freedom" and "illumination". It can be seen that Bush doesn’t emphasise the term "freedom" for nothing. This expression shows us that today, imperialist bandits, including US imperialism, underline the word that they’ll abuse, violate like freedom.
As it is known, after the attacks of 9/11 the imperialist aggression increased and even though it is clear that the attack was supposedly the straw that broke the camel’s back, the real reasons of this aggression are very clear for us. It is also clear that the primary reason of this aggression is the blockage of the imperialist system. Right after the attack, the most mentioned name, Usama Bin Ladin, was declared the main terrorist, Saddam a dictator who suppresses the masses, Iran and Syria evil countries and besides this some other attacks were included into the list of imperialism. We are very much aware of the fact that imperialism uses the pawns like Ladin and Saddam from time to time as a tool and then push them into a corner like a rag and forgets them.
To really understand the reasons of why the world’s number one murderer, USA, has increased its assaults, it would be useful to take a short look on the picture of recent US economy. US, who boosted military spending from 414.4 billion USD to 455.3 billion USD in one year (from 2003 to 2004) is holding 47% of the world’s total military spending that amount to 1 trillion and 35 billion. The starvation-limit rose in the ratio of 43% and reached 37 million USD in the last five years. The main nutrition source for the population under the starvation-limit has recently been mainly animal food. Besides the fact that the initiated attacks and occupations have not brought any results as we mentioned before, the growth of the wastage for the military expenses has become a fact in US economy. Today’s process of the Iraq occupation and the expression of Bush by saying that "the difficulties faced in Iraq were not counted mutually" are the result of the posture and the Resistance. Colin Powell made the following statement in February of 2005: "the result is scary; we lost this war. We will loose this war". Right after the attack they understood that they are wrong. But they already entered a hell with no exit. They tried from time to time to break the posture of the Resistance through different tactic manoeuvres, which of course were not enough for them, like the election process. Because the collaborators of US imperialism that have left them alone in Iraq also brought a deepening of the blind alley, they only way they can overcome the inability they have against the Iraqi Resistance is to increase military attacks and develop the military forces. These theories, pointed out by US ideologists as the only way, actually show in what deep blind alley they really are.
The entered process in Iraq, meaning that the Resistance from time to time accelerates and from time to time stands, still continues. Without a doubt, the road of the Resistance is drawn by the attacks of the occupiers. This situation, happening parallel in extends of these attacks, smashing the imperialist occupation and having the people in the Middle-East as a source of inspiration, carries an important dynamic. The fact that the Resistance only includes a resistance against the occupying forces is not independent from the value of the forces that lead the Resistance. It is of course a question of ideology to have a consistent anti-imperialist struggle and not just have a resistance against the occupation but also to turn this resistance against imperialism. The struggle against imperialism in the Middle-East and other different parts in the world are very important and its value must be understood correctly and also the different developments that happen have to be analysed from a right point of view.
The developments in Latin American countries, especially recently, are developments that must be focused on. It is from importance that from Hugo Chavez to Evo Morales, some various people were elected president with the etiquette of being "socialist". What really determines the importance of this issue is that the people voted for them because of the adjectives of them being "socialist" and "anti-imperialist". Though it is very clear that they are not socialist and that they will remain enable to liquidate capitalism and feudalism. It will be seen that when it comes to the point by putting on a total pose against imperialism and its extension in the country, they will remain breathless. The question is, under what reasons the broad masses have voted those people. The continent Latin America has accumulated an important potential of the common masses. The high number of balance of the military fascist dictatorships and the continuing of IMF and WB and its cause of destruction and plunder policies has pushed the people into a second exploitation mangle. This has caused that in the last years it has been an easy way to try to benefit from the socialist image and carry it through elections into power. But it is a fact that with the unmasking of the first example, Lula, that it is loosing its first speed already.
On this point it would be wrong and unjust to continue by not mentioning the World Social Forum (WSF). This organising method that grew mainly in 1999, after the protests against the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Seattle, where through the protests it was aimed to hitch the WEF summit. Nowadays where this kind of organising like NGO’s and a way of reformist organising is becoming a new fashion it deserves this importance to be talked about. In concern of its leadership structure, or in concern of setting only out the results of imperialism and putting the struggle against imperialism on the side, with its pose of constantly mentioning how much they are against violence and denying social and national liberation struggles, the understanding of the SF is an understanding that should be denied by anti-imperialist and revolutionary organisations. Of course this does not mean to analyse all organisations and fields inside the SF as an extension of imperialism. Though these organisations should really take place in movements that really are based on anti-imperialist principals. They should express themselves in a line where the real aim is to destroy the imperialist-capitalist system and its results of the poorness, torture, massacres, war etc. that the people in the world have to face and mention that this is a result of the imperialist-capitalist system.
Especially evident is the rage of the masses against US imperialism that doesn’t slow down and the broad masses big actions against Bush when he goes on his journeys. It is remarkable and meaningful to see the growing of anti-Americanism of the masses and their reaction and rage against the system. Bush, who was declared the unloved and entrusted man, increased this hatred with the numberless coffins that came from the Iraq war. Certainly it is also important to understand this in concern of the need which must be advanced, and this is the knowledge of class struggle that must be developed and increased. While waiting of the ferment explosion of the masses, it will only be possible to get real results under the condition that the explosion will be burst by a true leadership. This will only be possible and realised under consistent anti-imperialist struggle.
The 1960’s were years where the anti-imperialist struggle was on its highest point. This struggle that was advancing parallel to the revolutionary wave also affected our country, Turkey very soon. At the same time the stormy period of the 60’s also brought about the drawing of the revolutionary way in our country and its first steps were taken. Revolutionary leaders like Ibrahim Kaypakkaya, Mahir Cayan and Deniz Gezmis dared to form the revolutionary thoughts and advanced those thoughts within the growing movement and with this the revolutionary thoughts regarding the country's revolution. Today there are successors of those leaders that keep alive the thoughts of their tradition in our country. During that period different thesis’s and thoughts were put out on how to have a definitive result in the struggle against imperialism and their regional lackeys in our Country. One of the answers to the question on what way of revolution and method should be used in our country in that period inside the movement had become Protracted Peoples War. Again during that period the struggle against the 6th Fleet, which was US equipment, started to grow and became a symbol in the struggle against imperialism.
Imperialism might be the owner of the most advanced technological weapons and own a strong military force. Definitely this does not mean that imperialism will win. We witnessed this reality yesterday in Vietnam and today in Iraq. We saw and still see how the popular masses defeat a power much bigger than them, step by step. We have the knowledge that we own a strong weapon like the masses. We will not forget the reality that the result of a rebellion of millions will be a defeat for imperialism but will mean the liberation for the oppressed masses and we are embracing this reality. The only solution to defeat the strong imperialist enemy and make the oppressed reach liberation will be possible by acknowledging and organising the broad masses and make them struggle against the imperialist-capitalist system. History has been a stage of numberless popular resistances. And in history it is always those that resist that have the last word. All through history there are numberless victories, experiences and lessons present that have been taken from the oppressed which have upraised and shed their blood. While we are struggling against imperialism and by struggling take victories and experiences it becomes a nightmare for imperialism, because the people in the world continue their resistance against imperialist exploitation everywhere.
One of the regions where the resistance is on a high point is Asia. The growing struggles in many Asian countries for social and national liberation that are mainly waged under the principals of Peoples War continue to be the scary dreams of the imperialists. Especially US imperialism tries to suppress these struggles by even inserting the army. Still even through all those obstructions actually trying to choke the peoples’ struggles, they did not succeed. For example in the Philippines the growing social liberation struggle led under the principals of Peoples War has succeeded in terms of creating an alternative position to the present power. For this reason, the Arroyo regime which is directed by US imperialism has also under the directive of US imperialism declared the martial law last month. They found the last way in this martial law to arrest, imprison and kill the leaders of this struggle. But still all off this has not stopped or blockaded the march to freedom of the Filipino people.
In concern of Nepal, under the leadership of the NCP (M) that is waging Peoples War and which has been directing the National Democratic Front since 1996 keeps marching on with serious steps. The Peoples War that has been going on for 11 years has created almost 80% of power in the country and is building the Nepal Democratic Republic and continues to become stronger. The feudal monarchy of Nepal that has been squeezed into the state capital of the country has increased its exploitation against the masses. Against this the forces that are against the monarchy have formed an alliance with the Nepalese Maoists and under their leadership the people in Nepal are preparing to sew the flag in Kathmandu of an independent and democratic republic. It is necessary that all anti-imperialists, revolutionaries and democratic forces support the revolution in Nepal. They are in danger because of the threat of US imperialism and India expansionism. Merely the heroic Nepal people will drive away the imperialist invaders.
India also belongs to the chain of countries that wage Peoples War. In the last year Peoples War has moved forward fast and obtained a position in where it created such a danger that the US and its common collaborator Indian expansionism started broad operations.
Another country that has a history of struggle for social liberation is Colombia. Since 1964 the popular movement in Colombia has achieved a militant tradition against imperialism and its regional collaborators. In the last month only 15 FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionario del Columbia) leaders have been killed.
The imperialists that are in preparation for a psychological war against Iran want to drown Iran and its people in blood. Merely history has and is proving that the imperialists do not step back if it comes down to their existence and the danger of their belongings. This will never change the reality that they are "paper tigers". We can see this today by every loss of their blood, when they have to step back and when they are in death agony.
As a result of all of this we can come to the understanding that it is the only reality for the masses to be able to gain liberation to apply various forms of struggle in order to achieve victory. This means that we can not just reach this by keeping hope alive, but we also have the task to carry the struggle further. The responsibility leans on our shoulder. Today anti-imperialist forces and their formed organisations should take a stand against this imperialist aggression, because anti-imperialist struggle has a function of being a forefront of the real liberation of the oppressed people's social liberation and this function will grow. And to be able to make anti-imperialist struggle all over the world grow is to unite these kinds of struggles of the popular masses. The event that is held in Athens against imperialism and capitalism and to unite and increase the struggle of the people against imperialism is of great importance.
We must acknowledge this importance and increase events and resistance camps like this. We should utilize the lessons and experiences we can learn and share amongst each other on these events, we can do this in our own respected countries or internationally. On this issue, ILPS has got a determining role. Since 2001 it has played this role successfully. Let’s not forget, the organized and resisting people cannot be defeated. It is very clear sooner or later imperialism will be defeated and the resisting popular masses will win!
