Workshop: Greece – Turkey and the Cyprus issue. Quest of common resistance.
Speaker: Partizan - Turkey
The Turkish and Greek Cypriot laborers living on the island can solve the Cyprus question through unity!
Any of the solutions “offered” by the imperialists can not bring liberty to the island
The Cyprus question has continued for the last half century. As a result of the effort to sow discord among Greek and Turkish Cypriots that have been living together on the same island for years, the provocative policies of the reactionary Greek and fascist Turkish states and the spilling over of these policies in to the Island, the workers and toilers living in Cyprus have been divided into two parts.
Cyprus was a colony of British imperialism before 1974. The Greek fascist junta attempted a coup d’ etat in Cyprus led by Samson against Makarios. Their aim was to bind the island to Greece and to bring it under US control.
On the other hand, the fascist Turkish state, 32 years ago on 20th July 1974, militarily occupied northern Cyprus under the pretext of the existence of the Turkish nationals on the island. This is the date of the division of the island into two parts.
Cyprus continues to be important today. From the point of view of all imperialist powers, Cyprus is like an unsinkable ship. The significance of the island for the US imperialism was that it was an important base to impose militarily control on the Middle East and to counter the Russian social imperialist expansion in this region. Therefore, the US wanted Makarios removed, but the coup d’ etat and its leaders failed.
The Western European imperialist powers backed Turkish ruling classes and its occupation of Cyprus, opposing USA domination of the island.
The imperialist powers always acted according to their interests in the Cyprus question. While the US imperialism, for a period of time, did not raise any objection to the occupation by Turkey, then it behaved in such way to oppose Turkey, in order to keep Greece in hand.
Although 32 years has passed, Cyprus is still being quarrelled over among the imperialist forces. At present, the Southern Cyprus has joined the European Union with a new slavery act by being included in European Union. US imperialism has put forward an imperialist solution, known as Anan Plan, sponsored by the United Nations, in order to maintain influence over both Greece and Turkey.
Whereas the Anan Plan, which was put through a referendum, was accepted by the Turkish part, the Greek Cypriots rejected it. The main reason of this is that the Greek Cypriot part was considered as the legitimate representative of Cyprus. The economic problems of the Turkish part, unemployment and refusal of Turkish part to join the European Union were some important reasons for saying yes and accepting the plan in the referendum.
The Turkish population wishes to continue to live with Greek Cypriot workers. All the attempts to obstruct this tendency by the president, Rauf Denktaş have not succeeded.
The Anan Plan is an imperialist solution. Such a plan, which stipulates the union of two states under one roof, also proposes so-called solutions on the issues of land, migrants and property.
In fact, such solutions and plans only deal with the superficial aspects of the issue. The crucial aspect of the plan that remains hidden is that it is based on continued domination of imperialist powers, while Britain, Greek reactionary forces and fascist Turkish state continue as before acting as a “guarantor states”. So effectively it completely demolishes an independent country of Cyprus and maintains its semi-colonial structure.
Under Anan Plan, two British military bases are given under complete control of British imperialism. Control of Akrotiri and Dekelia by the British also means that they will be available to US imperialism.
In addition, accepting Greece and Turkey as "guarantor states” allows the two countries to maintain troops on the island. Keeping the numbers of existing soldiers to less than 10.000 allows them to interfere whenever they wish.
Presently, 38 % of Cyprus territory is under the control of the Turkish rule, 5 % under British and 57 % is under Greek Cypriot rule. The Greek and Turkish Cypriot parts are directed by the ruling classes of Greece and Turkey. Although there are historically many issues that connect the two populations to each other, the people of the island have been divided for the past 32 years.
The main aim of the US and the European imperialist powers is to resolve the Cyprus question in their own interests. The Greek and Turkish ruling classes accept the imperialist solution to serve their interests. However, the Greek and Greek Cypriot ruling classes want to take advantages arising from being members of the European Union against Turkish dominating classes. They insist on the condition that Turkey must recognize the Greek Cypriot part, open the customs to the Greek Cypriot part and solve the Aegean and 12 miles border issues in their favour. With the acceptance of these conditions they will not use their right to veto the discussions between Turkey and Europe Union. Although the European imperialist powers, for the moment, do not agree with these conditions they may use them as barraging chips in their dealing with the Turkish ruling class. This clearly demonstrates the divide and rule policy that has long been practiced by the imperialist powers in this region.
As Turkish revolutionaries and a progressive force, we believe that first the Turkish occupying forces and all military forces of the Greek reactionary bourgeoisie must be completely withdrawn from Cyprus. We consider that these forces do not have any right to remain on the island or represent or negotiate or use veto rights on behalf of the people of the island. Likewise, all territory under the control of the British imperialism must be unconditionally returned to the people of the island. The right of people of the island in living together and determining their own destiny by themselves can not be negated by any power. With a united struggle, the Greek and Turkish Cypriot workers must establish collective organizations and must struggle for the fundamental social changes. We, the Turkish revolutionaries, support the people of Cyprus in organizing themselves separately from Turkey and Greece. The revolution in Cyprus is independent of the revolutions in Turkey and Greece. We, revolutionaries from Turkey, refuse the attachment of the island to Greece and Turkey as a solution for the Cyprus question, since it is based on chauvinism. We clarify that the existence of the nationalities of Greek and Turkish Cypriots are different from the existence of Turkish nationalities in Turkey and Greek nationalities in Greece.
The only path to the liberation of the people of the island is the development of their own independent and united leaderships. Apart from this, any imperialist and forceful solution can not bring liberation and welfare to people of the island.
LONG LIVE THE UNITY OF THE WORKERS FROM TURKEY AND GREECE!
LONG LIVE UNITED, INDEPENDENT AND DEMOCRATIC CYPRUS!
ZITO O PROLETARIAKOS DIETHNISMOS!
